Kidney disease is one of the biggest killers of companion cats. It causes great pain and suffering, and there is no cure. A groundbreaking study to isolate and analyze genes that influence renal disease and hypertension (the two diseases often go hand in hand) has begun. The name of the study is "Unravelling The Genetic Basis of Blood Pressure and Kidney Function In The Cat". This important work will be led by Dr. Jonathan Elliott, MA, Vet MB, PhD, Cert SAC, Dip ECVPT, MRCVS and Dr. Rosanne Jepson, BVSc (Dist) MVetMed PhD DipACVIM DipECVIM MRCVS at the Royal Veterinary College, London.
Here are just a few reasons why you can feel proud about providing support for this study:
1. The potential clinical implications are huge; the results could lead to earlier detection of kidney disease, to greatly improved clinical care and treatment, and to improved quality of life for cats and the families who love them.
2. The study is humane. All individuals deserve to live free of harm, and to be treated with dignity and respect. We will not fund any research that causes harm to animals. The DNA that will be studied was derived from routine blood samples provided by companion cats during the course of their regularly scheduled veterinary visits. The samples, after being used for the necessary diagnostic purposes, were preserved for use in this study with the consent of the cats' human family members.
3. Feline Chronic Kidney Disease research is sorely underfunded. There are millions of companion cats and, sadly, approximately one of every three of them will develop kidney disease. We are the only charity dedicated solely to the understanding and treatment of feline kidney disease. Our organization consists entirely of volunteers, and our dedication to the highest ethical and financial standards means that you can trust us to answer your questions honestly, to use your donation prudently, and to work tirelessly to find a cure.
There is a wealth of data ready to be analyzed; it is a treasure trove of information waiting to be unlocked. Thus far, more than 1,500 samples are available for analysis, and the number is growing. Analysis of one sample costs $100.00. When gene associations are discovered, additional validation work will be required. And, there are additional avenues of research to be pursued that would provide very valuable insights into this terrible disease. We have granted $20,000.00 in funding thus far, but there is still much work to be done. Your support is essential. Please help us take these critically important steps toward improved quality of life for cats and the families that love them; please help us find a cure.

We care passionately about animal welfare issues, and about feline kidney disease in particular, but please understand that we are not veterinarians, and are not qualified to provide veterinary medical advice. If you have a companion animal suffering from kidney disease it is imperative that you consult with a licensed veterinarian, who is qualified to provide you with medical advice and care that meets your animal’s particular health needs.
